YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program

At the Oct. 3, 2012 Membership Meeting, Sheryl Grover from the YMCA gave an overview of the Diabetes Prevention Program--A program offered by the YMCA to prevent Type 2 Diabetes in adults. Diabetes is the 6th leading cause of death in Minnesota. It is the leading cause of blindness, lower extremity amputations, and chronic kidney disease.
The prevention program is a 16-session program over eight months. One hour sessions focus on healthy eating, physical activity, and behavior modification. The goals are to reduce body weight by 7% with participation in 150 minutes of physical activity per week.Risk factors include being over weight, age 45+, family history, blood pressure 140/90 or higher, elevated cholesterol, inactivity, and ethnicity.
